Visit a real working Edinburgh farm to see organic produce at-source. Learn first- hand where what you eat comes from and the journey it goes on before reaching your plate. You’ll get a chance to harvest your own fruits & veggies and assist in crafting a seasonal, organic meal from-scratch, alongside dynamic farmer-chef Scott. Enjoy your meal in full organic glory, by washing it down with mouth watering cider brewed locally, using apples from the farm’s on-site orchard.
Detailed description:Join me on my family run organic working farm! We have a two- hundred acre paradise hidden amongst the Edinburgh hills. Upon arrival you will be welcomed with some delicious organic veggies, edible flowers and a Charcuterie board. This gets us warmly introduced and fuelled before starting our starting our on-foot tour. We will walk and talk through the farm’s diverse offering, showing you how and when we plant, insight into the area’s biodiversity, soil conditions and the temperatures we work with to produce as we do: 100% organically.
A big focus will be the seasonality of fruit & vegetables and how we harvest responsibly and commit to zero-waste. You will gather your own ingredients from the farm while touring with me. We plant tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, kale, lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, chard and cabbage as well as pumpkin, strawberries, apples, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries - even watermelon + more!
We also have our own cows on the land to greet you. You will be talked through the process of our dairy, where we produce milk and cheese that along with our other produce we supply to local homes, restaurants, organic shops and food markets.
The tour ends up in our farmhouse kitchen, where you’ll be led in creating a bountiful multi-course seasonal meal. We focus this around food for health, highlighting the benefits of eating organic produce and a belief that it is nature’s most powerful medicine.
After all is prepared, as deserved: we take time together to enjoy the meal at our hearty farm table (which in true zero-waste fashion is made from the farm’s surplus wood). The meal is paired with sweet refreshing cider produced from our orchard’s apples - and of course great conversation between new friends!
I’ve been immersed in farming my whole life, following in the footsteps of my family tree. Farming and family are at the heart of everything on our farm and in daily life. I live on the farm with my wife Ailsa, our three children, two labradors, around thirty cows and too many chickens and ducks to take count!
I have just finished a doctorate in sustainable agriculture, a goal of mine I had to put aside whilst the children were younger. This was crucial to me being able to commit ongoing to running a 100% organic and environmentally friendly business as my ancestors did, even with the hurdles and complications of the modern world.
Framing as we do has enormous ecological value as well as a powerful impact on our local community’s heritage and livelihoods. This is something I always look forward to sharing with people, whether its avid organic foodies or those who might not be familiar with this way of living at all.
