Detailed description:Join me for a lively gastronomic tour of the most iconic market in the heart of São Paulo city. The Municipal Market of São Paulo opened in 1933 as a wholesale and
retail destination specialising in fruits, vegetables, cereals, meats, spices and other food products. Located in the historic centre of São Paulo’s Mercado neighbourhood (a name that references the market itself) it’s known by locals as the Mercadão, or "big market”. It’s become a popular meeting point for natives and is a top foodie spot to visit when in the city.
Together we’ll discover the organic ingredients, seasonings and spices true to ‘real’ Brazilian cuisine…as us locals know and like them! You can taste iconic dishes such as Feijoada, Pão de Queijo or even the market’s famous ‘mortadella sandwich’ or. ‘cod cake’ - which is known as one of the best on offer in Brazil.
With me as your local guide, it means you can guarantee getting the best prices for anything you want to sample or pick up on your way round. It is a ‘who you know’ as well as ‘what you know’ world we live in after all. It also means you can really experience interacting with the traders, just like you are one of us locals too!
Whilst being the perfect tour for your tastebuds, you’ll learn plenty of knowledge too, I promise! I’ll talk you through how to select the best produce and ingredients, give some history about how they are used in kitchens here and some tips on how to use and adapt them for recipes or techniques from your own culture.
Join me for a journey into Brazilian cuisine and come away with a full stomach + the expertise to add Brazilian taste twists to your own favourite dishes and recipe books back home.
My name is Rodrigo, and I was born and raised in São Paulo. I’m a trained chef and run the kitchen at a traditional Brazilian restaurant here in the city. Im also a big lover of wine. A glass of deep-red is my go-to! As well as a fan of cooking at home and for others in my job… with such a rich choice of places to source, eat and drink in the city, I’m constantly out and about finding new venues and markets to try.
I love my country and my city. Gastronomy is a massive part of national and regional culture here, so I’m proud to show visitors the best on offer! I enjoy nothing more than meeting people to make memories and share foodie stories, culinary culture and travel tips.
